Clingmans Dome Overview
Clingmans Dome is a mountain with an observation tower along the Appalachian National Scenic Trail in Great Smoky Mountains National Park. On a clear day, visitors are treated to 360-degree views of the Smokies with visibility as far as 100 miles.
Clingmans Dome was formerly named Smoky Dome by American Settlers. In 1859, it was renamed for a Confederate general, Thomas L. Clingman. The Cherokee name for the mountain is Kuwahi or Kuwohi, or “mulberry place.” There is currently an application to have the native name restored by the United States Board on Geographic Names.
At 6,643 feet tall, Clingmans Dome is the third-highest point east of the Mississippi River. It’s the highest point in the park and the highest point along the 2,192-mile Appalachian Trail. It’s also one end of the Mountains-to-Sea Trail across North Carolina.
The area includes a steep, paved trail to the top of the 45-foot observation tower, a visitors center, restrooms, and access to several other trails. The Appalachian Trail passes through and the Forney Ridge Trail to Andrews Bald also starts here.
The observation tower was built in 1958-1959 and is included on the National Register of Historic Places. The paved ramp to climb to the top of the tower is at a steep 12% grade. Thanks to its construction, Clingmans Dome is the most accessible mountaintop in the Smokies.
The tower was constructed as part of the National Park Service’s Mission 66 program. To commemorate the 50th anniversary of the establishment of the agency, many visitor services were improved prior to 1966. The Shark Valley Observation Tower in Everglades National Park was built with a similar design.
How to Prepare For Your Visit to Clingmans Dome
I strongly recommend bringing a jacket or other warm layers. Since the elevation is so much higher than other places in the park, temperatures can be 10-20 degrees colder. Conditions are often windy and rainy as well. Even if you’re visiting the Smokies in the summer, prepare to be chilly at Clingmans Dome.
Plan to climb the observation tower slowly. If you’re used to low elevations in other parts of the park, the climb will be challenging. Take your time to avoid injury.
Remember that weather conditions in the park can change quickly. You may arrive at the Clingmans Dome area to find nothing but fog. On other days, you may have limited visibility but still have nice views. The Smokies are called Smoky for a reason, and air pollution creates hazy conditions often.
Make sure to get a parking tag while parked at the Clingmans Dome parking area. These are required throughout the park if you are parked for more than 15 minutes.
If there are no parking spots when you arrive, circle the lot or come back at another time. Illegally parking outside of designated spaces may result in a citation from park law enforcement. To avoid parking congestion, visit early in the morning.

How to Get to Clingmans Dome
Clingmans Dome is about 1 hour from downtown Gatlinburg, Tennessee, and 45 minutes from Cherokee, North Carolina.
Clingmans Dome is located off Highway 441 (Newfound Gap Road) in Great Smoky Mountains National Park. From here, you’ll drive up Clingmans Dome Road, a 7-mile winding road that leads to a parking area. There are several pullouts along the way for photos as well.
Clingmans Dome Road closes for inclement winter weather, typically from December to March. During this time, visitors are able to ski or hike to the observation tower.
Next, if you wish, you’ll make the steep climb to the top of the observation tower. The paved trail is only 1/2 mile, but quite challenging. You’ll gain 332 feet in elevation along the path. Take your time so you can adjust to the altitude.
Pets and bicycles are not permitted on the trail to Clingmans Dome. The paved path is not wheelchair-accessible due to its steep grade.
When to Visit Clingmans Dome
Some of the most popular times to visit are sunrise and sunset. While the views are incredible, this area has limited parking. It’s best to avoid visiting at peak times if you want to ensure you have a place to park. Purchasing the required parking tags does not guarantee you a parking space.
Clingmans Dome is also a popular destination to view fall foliage. While fall isn’t as busy as the summer season, visitors should still expect crowds in the park, particularly when foliage is at its peak color.

Before your visit, check current conditions by viewing the Clingmans Dome webcam. This will help you decide whether it’s worth the drive and competition to find a parking spot. Since the elevation is so much higher at Clingmans Dome, it may have completely different weather than Gatlinburg or other surrounding communities.
