If you want to avoid crowds, try traveling in the off-season. If you’re here for fall colors, October is the time to go. If you want the best weather, join the hoards of people flocking to the park in August.

When is the Best Time to Visit Acadia National Park?
Personally, we believe the best times of year to visit Acadia are the months of May, June, September, and October. However, the best time to visit Acadia National Park will depend on your personal preferences.
To Avoid Crowds and Save Money: Visit between November and May

As with any other place in the world, the weather is still unpredictable. These charts are meant to serve as a general guideline. Remember that weather conditions are always subject to change.

Visiting Acadia in Spring (March, April, and May)
March, April, and May are the months that see the most precipitation. You’ll definitely want to bring your rain gear.
Snow melt can also bring muddy trails, so be prepared with waterproof boots. Unless there was an excessive amount of precipitation, the park usually dries out in late spring (by mid-April or early May).
Keep in mind that this is the off-season in Acadia. Many local businesses may still be closed, preparing for summer, and park facilities may be on limited hours as well. If you want services to be open, delay your visit until at least mid-May.
These months also see the most fog, particularly in the mornings.
If you’re hoping to partake in some water-based activities, it’s probably still too cold in Acadia in the spring.

Visiting Acadia in Summer (June, July, and August)
July and August have the best weather, but this coincides with the most crowds.
If you visit during this time, expect higher lodging rates and wait times at restaurants. We suggest making dinner reservations in advance to avoid the wait, and reserve your accommodations as early as possible, too.
Along with summer crowds in town, you should expect congestion on the Park Loop Road and crowded parking lots. We highly recommend taking the free Island Explorer shuttle to limit the hassle.
Another great way to avoid crowds in Acadia is starting your day early (before 8 a.m.), or even waiting until around dinner time to partake in popular activities.
Exploring parts of Acadia National Park that are not along the Park Loop Road will also offer some solitude. The western side of Mount Desert Island is known as “the quiet side” and while it’s still popular, it’ll be a nice reprieve from the Park Loop Road crowds. The Schoodic Peninsula also offers similar experiences without crowds.
If you’d rather avoid the crowds entirely, then May or June may be a better option for you. In my opinion, crowds don’t seem to really descend on Acadia until after July 4. Take advantage of the nice summer weather and visit in June to beat the crowds.
However, mid-May to mid-June does seem to have the most biting bugs, so bring your bug spray!
If you’re hoping to swim or partake in other water-based activities, late summer will be the best time to visit Acadia National Park.
Lastly, one of the best reasons to visit Acadia in late summer is the blueberries. You’ll find them all over the park, including the top of Cadillac Mountain, and they’re absolutely delicious! If you don’t want to pick them yourself, local shops and businesses sell blueberry-flavored foods all summer long.

Visiting Acadia in Fall (September, October, and November)
If you’re looking to see fall colors in all their glory, Acadia National Park is the place to be. The best time to visit Acadia National Park is typically September and October, especially for fall colors, but keep in mind that the dates can vary depending on the weather.

Between Labor Day weekend and mid-to-late September is also one of the best times to visit Acadia National Park to avoid large crowds. This is between a crowded holiday weekend and the leaf-peeping season.
This is the busiest season for cruise ships, so you should still expect hundreds of thousands of tourists walking the streets of Bar Harbor.
By late October, once the leaves have fallen from the trees, the park and locals seem to go into their annual hibernation. Many businesses will start to close.

Visiting Acadia in Winter (December, January, and February)
The winter months in Acadia are quite pleasant! If you don’t mind cold temperatures, there often isn’t much snow (Mount Desert Island’s average is 61 inches, but it tends to melt quickly). Still, the temperatures are rarely above freezing, so pack your warmest clothes.
Many shops and businesses will be closed for winter, so be prepared. This includes hotels, restaurants, the Jordan Pond House, and the park’s Hulls Cove Visitor Center. If you’d like to speak to park rangers for trip planning or other questions, check out the Bar Harbor Chamber of Commerce.
Winter also brings some closures to Acadia, including popular trails and sections of the Park Loop Road. Weather-dependent, partial road closures are generally in effect from December through mid-April. The Ocean Drive section (between Sand Beach and Thunder Hole) and Jordan Pond Road usually stay open. It’s a good idea to check current conditions before you go.
If you enjoy winter activities like cross-country skiing or snowshoeing, miles of Carriage Roads provide lovely routes through the park. If you prefer snowmobiling, parts of the Park Loop Road are open to you in the winter. There are a few places that remain open in Bar Harbor that rent winter gear.
When to Visit Acadia for Unique Experiences
To see the true first light from Cadillac Mountain, visit between October 7 and March 6. Even though it won’t be the country’s first sunrise, you can still see the sunrise from Cadillac Mountain year-round (and it’s always gorgeous). Remember, you’ll need vehicle reservations from May 25 to October 22.

If you’d like to camp in Acadia, the best time to visit is late May to early September. This is when you’ll have the most comfortable camping temperatures. Remember, though, biting bugs like the months of May and June.

There is a fee to enter Acadia National Park and it is now in effect year-round. It’ll cost $30 per vehicle, $25 per motorcycle, or $15 per person (on foot or by bicycle). These entrance permits are valid for 7 days.
In order to save money, I would recommend purchasing a national parks pass. These cost $80 and are valid for a full calendar year (from the date of purchase) at all public lands in the United States.
